History & Heritage
The mission of the Local Studies Collection is to collect, preserve and make publicly available information resources, in any format, that document environmental, historical, social, cultural or developmental attributes of the area that fall within the boundaries of the Town of Cambridge.
The Local Studies collection aims to be of use to anyone with an interest in the local area.
Materials within the collection include those suitable for use by primary school students through to those of a highly detailed and technical nature.
The collection is housed in a separate, purpose-built area within the Library and includes books, reports, oral histories, photographs, maps, newspaper clippings and other items of local interest.
Items in the collection are not available for loan but may be used in the Library.
A digitisation program is underway in order to make as much of the collection available online as possible.
The Local Studies collection relies heavily on the help and knowledge of our local community, in building our local knowledge bank for future generations. If you have items of interest, such as historical photographs or documents, that you would like to donate or would allow us to copy we would be very grateful for your contribution.
We also welcome background information to photographs that are already part of the collection, or written accounts of early memories of the local area.
